This song is a commentary on the challenges that modern-day women, especially teenage girls and young women, face in the world of neoliberalism. Women today are constantly pulled in different directions due to the pressures of capitalism, and Haliliuc (2019) writes about this extensively in her commentary on Sia’s ‘Strained Girl’.
The song captures the essence of the strains that women face today in a world that demands more and more from them, and the main effect of this which is loneliness. The meandering and reflective melody highlights the vulnerability and uncertainty that I felt whilst writing the song.
